2024 Australian Interior Design Awards shortlist

The shortlist for the 21st Australian Interior Design Awards (AIDA) has been revealed. Standing as the pinnacle of Australia’s industry-based design accolades, the Australian Interior Design Awards celebrates interior design excellence, with the awards holding both national and international significance. The program is a partnership between the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) and Architecture Media’s Artichoke. It provides a platform to showcase completed projects spanning residential, commercial, and public sectors, from both established and emerging designers.

As the Australian design and architecture industry continues to evolve, so too does the level of creativity and innovation within each project submission for the 2024 Australian Interior Design Awards program. This year’s shortlist features a record-breaking 222 projects which, when taken together, provide a unique narrative and perspective that reflects the current industry landscape, showcasing authenticity, character, and material innovation.

Commenting on the Residential Design category, jury member Beatrix Rowe said: “It was great to see a mix of projects, from those that have an intentional austerity to those featuring indulgent layering. This reflects the diversity of design within Australia. Entries that impressed me within the Residential Design category work harmoniously with the architecture or site’s context. I responded to projects that show a commitment to the story of the design, where I can feel how the home reflects its inhabitants. As usual, there is a high standard of detailing throughout.”

Juror David Flack said of the Hospitality Design category: “The most impressive projects have a very clear and concise point of view in regards to the brief. This year’s entries feature strong interiors within heritage buildings, spaces that have a lovely human scale and intimacy to them and the bold use of lighting to create atmosphere. Materials are restrained yet warm and tactile, and there is an apparent return to spaces that are friendly and welcoming rather than spaces that are thematic, which creates a very clear design language. I also noticed direct associations between the interiors and cuisine. Consumers are looking for authenticity and something that doesn’t look and feel like anything else.”

The shortlisted projects are in the following categories:

Hospitality Design

Installation Design

Public Design

Retail Design

Residential Design

Residential Decoration

Workplace Design

Convened by Geraldine Maher, Director of Maher Design, the jury comprises Katherine Ashe (Vittino Ashe); Richard Coulson (Cox); David Flack (Flack Studio); Paul Foskett (Design APAC, Populous); Beatrix Rowe (Beatrix Rowe Interior Design); Madeline Sewall (Breathe); Isabelle Toland (Aileen Sage Architects); and Adele Winteridge (Foolscap Studio).

The awards and commendations will be announced at the gala presentation on Friday 14 June at the Sofitel Wentworth in Sydney. The top prize, the Premier Award for Australian Interior Design will also be announced at the gala.

The shortlist can be viewed on the Australian Interior Design Awards website.
